About Us

Founded in the year 1916, SNDT Women's University, the first Women's University of the country, established its Centre for Distance Education in the year 1979. The centre was formed with the clear intention of continuing with its mission of 'Empowerment of Women' through education. The centre focussed on the advantages that Distance and flexible education could bring to women in India. It was visioned to bring in liberalisation, flexibility and affordability to the masses.

The Centre focussed on bringing in Professional and Job Oriented courses for the women students. Today, the Centre for Distance Education offers several Degree Courses, both at the graduation and the post- graduation levels. The Centre has also introduced a few short term Certificate and Diploma programs in various disciplines. The Centre proved to be a blessing to several women students who, for various reasons, could not complete their education and/or professional qualifications.

In the last 33 years, more than 3,00,000 students have benefitted from the facility and have improved on their respective qualifications.

Our Goals

  • To provide opportunities of L3 education (Life Long Learning) to working women for upgrading educational/professional qualifications.
  • To provide education to those women who cannot attend the college due to various circumstances.
  • To act as an Educational Resource Centre for women.

About SNDT ICT Enabled ODL Programs

SNDT - ICT Enabled ODL Programs was launched about a year back by the University under the able tutelage of the Vice Chancellor Prof. Vasudha Kamat. The University decided to launch a full-fledged 80 Credits Course – Masters of Commerce (MCom) in the ICT Enabled ODL Programs mode. The project received the guidance of several dignitaries of the University including the Registrar, the Pro Vice-Chancellor and the HOD for the Department of Education Technology. The program was missioned to provide the ability of continued education to a large women audience, who due to several reasons, were not being able to continue their higher education. The ICT Enabled ODL Programs provide several benefits including wide reach, easy accessibility, anywhere- anytime learning at an affordable cost, freedom of learning at your own pace and the biggest of all learning through mobiles, tablets , computers or laptops. The women folk, from across the world, can now take these high quality programs and enjoy the flexibility it provides.

The program saw encouraging response from students and society and the University decided to launch more courses in the digital format in the current academic season. The project is currently headed by the Director of Distance Education, Dr. Arundathi Chavan.
